(1/28/2019, 7:20pm) At around 4:15 pm today, APD officers responded to a home in the 2100 block of Alma Street, to a report of a child being shot. Officers arrived and found that a five-year-old female had been shot in the side. The child was conscious and alert when officers arrived, and was taken to a local hospital. The child's condition was stable at the time of this release.
Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and began their investigation. Although initial reports indicated the shot had been fired outside the home, the evidence at the scene indicated that the firing of the gun was accidental. The details of the accidental discharge are still being investigated, however the evidence showed that the gun was fired inside the house.
"This is a horrible thing to happen to a child, and I just hope that her injuries heal quickly," said Chief Jerrod King. "My thoughts are with her and her family, and I pray for a speedy recovery." Chief King was out of town due to a family emergency, but has been monitoring the situation since it occurred.
The identity of the victim is not being released. There are no further details at this time.
