(1/29/2019, 6:30 am) On Monday, January 28, APD responded to a home in the 2100 block of Alma Street, where a five-year-old female had been shot in the side. The girl was transported to a local hospital, where she was treated and has been in stable condition since yesterday evening. Initial reports indicated that the gun had been fired from outside, into the house, however this was quickly disproved. After processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses to the incident, Detectives were able to ascertain that the shooting was accidental.
Detectives identified a male who had also been inside the home, Joshua Demond Vercher. Investigators determined that Vercher had been in the room with the child and was messing with the gun and accidentally fired it. Someone in the house called for help, and the gun was disposed of before officers arrived. It was later determined that Vercher had also fired the gun in the air near the house the previous night.
Vercher was charged with 2nd Degree Cruelty to a Juvenile, Possession of CDS I with Intent to Distribute, Illegal Carrying of a Weapon With Drugs, and Illegal Use of a Weapon. He was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center.
