City Employee, Plus One, Charged with Theft of City Property

On October 29, at around 8:30 am, APD responded to a report of a theft of lawn mowers from the Martin Community Center on Mill Street. According to the initial report, the mowers were parked on the property for the weekend and when personnel arrived at work on Monday, they were gone. Later, around 6:15 pm, APD received a call that the two stolen mowers were in an alley between Wise Street and Harris Street. When responding officers approached, they encountered a male subject, identified as Larry Browder, who was spray painting the mowers. The mowers were recovered by city employees.

Suspect Charged After Fighting Dog Found Badly Injured

On October 27, APD Detectives made an arrest related to dogfighting, following an investigation beginning early this year. APD first took a report in February that a dog was brought to the Alexandria Animal Control Facility after having been found in a ditch. The dog was badly injured, with much of the flesh torn off of its face, and the remaining flesh was badly infected. The injuries were so severe the dog had to be euthanized.

Surveillance Video Leads to Burglary Arrests

On October 18, APD responded to a residence in the 400 block of Welwyn Way. The resident reported that a male subject broke into one of his vehicles, and attempted to break into the other. Surveillance video captured footage of the crimes and was provided to officers. Detectives disseminated photos of the suspect to officers, and a patrol officer recognized the man as someone he had interviewed the same night walking in the area. The patrol officer's body-worn camera footage was reviewed and the subject from the camera was the same male from the residence's surveillance footage.

Man Charged with Cruelty to Juveniles

On October 15, APD was contacted by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) after two children tested positive for drugs. The children, ages 2 and 3, were tested after they were found in a Laurel Street residence where drug activity was taking place. APD officers obtained an arrest warrant on Dalton Barton, who was at the house and responsible for the two children when DCFS was contacted. On October 23, officers located Barton at his house and he was place under arrest without incident.

Suspect Charged with Multiple Burglaries After Leaving His Name

On October 15, APD responded to a report of a burglary of a residence in the 5400 block of Downing Street. According to the initial report, the resident woke to find a male subject inside his home, who left after encountering the resident. A video game system was stolen during the burglary, and the residents found an object had been left near where the system had been. The object had a name on it, and the residents used that name to search social media and were able to identify the suspect.

Burglary Detectives Catch Suspect Wanted for Multiple Break-Ins

Detectives with the Alexandria Police Department Property Crimes Unit came in to work at midnight last night to conduct burglary patrol in targeted neighborhoods. These targeted areas have seen recent spikes in both vehicle and residential burglaries, including the Garden District area of Elliott and Marye Streets, and the Wilshire Park neighborhood off Jackson Street.

APD Officer Charged with Assault

On October 14, the Alexandria Police Department received a report of a disturbance involving an off-duty Alexandria police officer. The complainant reported that the off-duty officer, identified as Corporal Ronnie Stevens, had caused a disturbance by yelling and cursing, and had made verbal threats toward another person with the complainant. This incident took place at around 4:40 pm, and the report was made around 5:00 pm at APD Headquarters.

Patrol Shift Catches Armed Robbery Suspect

On October 13, at around 10:30 pm, APD officers responded to a report of a robbery in the 2000 block of Albert Street. While officers were en route to the scene, the suspect, who was reportedly armed with a handgun, fled the area on foot. One responding officer saw a man fitting the suspect's description a few blocks away on Culver Street. The officer turned to pursue while radioing for backup, at which point the man saw him and ran away from him. Other officers quickly arrived on scene and the man was located hiding under some brush near Culver Street and Barrister Street.
